Due to popular demand, we are continuing to offer online CPD days (via Zoom), with downloadable notes and access to post-event recordings for those unable to attend live. Rodents in First Opinion Practice, presented by Dr Sonya Miles, RCVS Recognised Advanced Practitioner in Zoological Medicine and WAVMA Certified Aquatic Species Veterinarian, delivers 8 hours of CPD tailored for general practitioners and veterinary nurses seeking greater confidence with rodent patients. This comprehensive CPD day is structured around the realities of first opinion practice, covering the rodent consultation from reception and transport through to clinical examination, diagnostics, anaesthesia, dentistry, common medical conditions, and emergency care.

Participants will develop practical skills in low-stress handling and examination, learn how to recognise pain and subtle signs of illness in prey species, and gain confidence in diagnostic approaches including imaging. The course explores rodent-specific anaesthetic and analgesic protocols, detailed management of dental disease, and a wide range of common conditions affecting guinea pigs, rats, chinchillas, gerbils, and hamsters. A dedicated focus on the emergency rodent patient equips attendees with clear strategies for triage, stabilisation, fluid therapy, nutritional support, and pain management. Throughout the day, emphasis is placed on prevention, realistic client communication, and knowing when referral or palliative care is appropriate, ensuring vets and nurses are well prepared to manage rodent cases safely and effectively in first opinion practice.
